Playdough Activity for Young Children

 

One creative activity that families can use to support their children's early literacy development is practicing writing letters with playdough. This is a simple activity that only requires a few materials, which is great for families who want to easily integrate literacy development at home with their children. The materials needed are playdough, cookie cutters with different letter shapes, plastic utensils, and other open-ended and creative tools that can be used to make letters.

As for the process of carrying out this activity, you can first sing the alphabet song with your child and go through the cookie cutter letters one at a time. This can help the child work on their letter recognition before they start working with the playdough. After going through all the letters of the alphabet, give the child playdough using various colors to make it more fun. Model how to use the cookie cutters, utensils, and whatever other tools you choose to use. Lastly, allow the child to work with the playdough and verbalize which letters the child is writing in order to support recognition.
