Puppet Literacy Activity for Children

One creative activity that can be used to support early literacy skills is puppet making and storytelling. The materials needed for this activity are crafts to build the puppets, such as popsicle sticks, paper bags, markers, crayons, buttons, yarn, and a variety of other open-ended craft supplies. Additionally, you can have children's books accessible if children need inspiration for their puppets.

As for the process, the first step is to have the children make their puppets. They should be encouraged to use their imagination and creativity to make their puppets however they want. Next, you can model using a puppet to read a book and then create a story of your own. After that, you can encourage the children to choose a book and read with their puppets in order to practice reading skills. The children can even write their own stories and perform the stories with their puppets.

This activity supports early reading and writing by encouraging literacy practice through play and creativity. Children can practice reading books by using their puppets to speak and read for them. This can be a less intimidating way to practice reading, especially for children who may struggle with this. Additionally, this activity encourages children to practice their writing skills by allowing them to create their own stories and write them out. The good thing about this puppet activity is that it is very open-ended and allows for a variety of different approaches, depending on the age of the child and what they need to work on.
