Scavenger Hunt Activity for Early Literacy Development

A creative approach that can be used to support early literacy skills is a scavenger hunt activity. The materials needed for this activity are a list of clues or questions related to early literacy and something to write with.

Some ideas for clues that can be included on the list are:
  • Find something that rhymes with "bee."
  • Find an object that starts with the letter "A."
  • Find a letter "S."
  • Find something that has two syllables.
  • Find an object that ends with the /t/ sound.
As for the process of this activity, it is very simple. First, make a list of clues for your child, which can be accommodated based on their current literacy knowledge and concepts that they may need to work on. Then, decide whether you want to make this an indoor or outdoor activity. For example, you can take your child on a nature walk and do the scavenger hunt there. Lastly, make sure to guide your child and facilitate as needed while completing the activity, while still making it a challenge for them to use critical thinking skills.

This scavenger hunt activity supports early reading and writing by allowing children to practice early foundational skills that are needed for literacy, such as letter sounds, alphabetical knowledge, rhyming, and learning about syllables. This activity allows children to be actively engaged while they are learning. Also, if you choose to make this a "literacy walk" by taking this activity outdoors, you can incorporate science and elements of nature as well.
